Putting it in Perspective: What is "extreme" macro?

Extreme macro is closeup photography that goes beyond the traditional "lifesize" or "1x" magnification ratio.  To get an idea of just how far I have taken this, look at the photos below.  The first one is a normal photograph of a pansie blossom; most people would miss seeing the tiny green aphid sitting on one of the petals.  Upon closer inspection, you can see that this aphid is a "mama" aphid with two of her babies near by.  The second photo is "full frame", meaning that it has not been cropped or "zoomed in on"...that's actually how the photograph looked when I shot it at 5x magnification.
